Influenza Vaccine Update - November 13, 2009

Seasonal Influenza:

We have recently received 80 additional doses of seasonal flu vaccine which will be given to patients on a first come first served basis. Higher risk patients for complications of seasonal influenza include the elderly, those with chronic respiratory disease like asthma, and those with immune compromise. We will be giving out the vaccine to interested parties during our regular business hours.

H1N1 INFLUENZA VACCINE

H1N1 vaccine is being produced in two forms; a nasal spray and injectable form. The nasal vaccine, Flumist, is a live virus vaccine, which is indicated for non-pregnant patients between the ages of 2 to 48. The injectable vaccine is a vaccine that contains only particles from the flu virus and not intact virus. This vaccine is safe for patients of all ages, including pregnant women. The high risk groups for H1N1 include infants, young children, and pregnant women. Health care and safety workers are also high priority recipients.

At present we do not have any Flumist or injectable H1N1 vaccine.

We have not been told when to expect the shipment of H1N1. Control of all of the H1N1 vaccine has been seized by the Federal government, which is distributing available supplies of H1N1 vaccine through State and Local government channels. At present, San Diego Public Health Department is not able to say when it will be able to give vaccine to private doctors serving adults. The Public Health Department has been conducting vaccination clinics for high risk individuals as they receive shipments of vaccine. Information on these clinics can be found on the San Diego County website. This is a constantly changing situation.

We will post an announcement on this website as soon as we receive any H1N1 vaccine.
